Shifting Gears On Language

Do you use slang? How do you feel about people who do?
Write about the way people use language. Consider the following:

  • Are there different kinds of slang?
  • What types of people use slang?
  • When is slang appropriate?
  • When is slang not appropriate?

In order to receive full credit you must write at least 5 complete and correct sentences with quotation marks around any slang words you use. You must also respond to a classmate's post using one of the following sentence starters:
I agree because...
I disagree because...
I don't understand...
That reminds me of...

  1. I think that slang should not be used. My reason why I think slang should not be used is because a lot of people have no clue how to use slang, a lot of slang can be used to say mean things to other people. Personally I think that slang should not exist or just not be used in a bad manner.

    2. I agree that a lot of people don't know how to use slang however i do not agree that it doesn't exist. I don't agree that it shouldn't exist because in my opinion it adds a little like extra flair in your words.

    3. I agree it should not be used. Some people don't even know they're using slang. You should just stick to regular english language

  2. I use slang a lot.I also don't feel that its that bad to use slang because your saying it ,writing it on paper would be a different story. I feel like any regular person uses slang, a lot of people curse to which is also slang. Slang is just how some people talk or pronounce things so i feel that it is okay to use slang when you talk just not when you write it on a paper or essay of some sort.

    1. I agree how you don't think it's bad to use slang. I also agree how you should not use slang when you are writing an essay, blog, or anything you are trying to publish. At the same time, slang also makes you kinda sound dumb and stupid at the same time. I would not like being known as the person who sounds dumb, but might be really smart.

  3. My opinion on slang is many people use slang because its sounds more natural. I personally use slang all of the time. Many people take slang to far, to the point you can't understand them at all. when you text or right on the computer you should try and talk properly as possible. So people can understand you coherently. On the other hand on the phone or in person you can talk slang because you can understand a lot better.

    3. Yes i agree that some people take slang to far and you can't understand them. Also i agree that people should only use slang when talking, not texting or writing

    4. I totally agree with what you just said about how it sounds more natural. In todays society its more natural to us teens then it was back then. Also that some people do take it to a point where its completely improper and ghetto.

  4. Yes, I use slang. When I use slang it's mostly because I am honestly too lazy, or just because I use it too much that I forget how I said/say something. I think it's appropriate to use slang when you take it as a joke or that is just how you like to talk. I don't think it's appropriate to use slang when you are mocking someone. I think the definition of slang is ghetto and improper, because it doesn't sound right or proper.

    1. I agree completely. Also I think you shouldn't use slang while talking to adults or officials. Everybody uses slang and forgets the real word is so true.

  5. No i so not use slang, i feel that people that use slang just do not know their grammar. Its so simple to say the word the correct way. I don't see the point to purposely say the word in "slang" language. Slang to me, is never appropriate. Most likely you will see most ghetto people use slang.

  6. In my opinion slang is a language that people use to shorten words. There aren't really different types of slang, in my opinion most slang comes from where you were from. I think slang is appropriate when your talking about stuff less serious. Slang is not appropriate when your talking about more serious matters like if your at a meeting etc you'll sound uneducated.

    1. i agree with you because people don't realize that when you are in a serious situation you need to pick the appropriate word attire.

    2. i agree slang is more of a laid back easy way of talking then having to check what you say to make sure its proper with everything you say.

  7. I feel that everybody uses slang some might use it intentionally and some might not even know there speaking slang. Slang to me is words that we would usually say but in a shorter ghetto version. Most of the time slang is not appropriate to use. Yes, talking to your friends its fine but its not so good if your talking to an adult. People that use slang are most likely teenagers that know the newly formed slang but some adults might also.

  8. I am used to slang. I think there are many types of it. I think slang is any word that is used to replace another word , kind of like a synonym .For example , cursing. You can say " I don't feel good" , but if you used slang you would say "I feel like sh*t." It can also be like code words . People use them ll the time.Slang is appropriate when you're joking around or with friends. I personally use it when people are stressed , it makes them laugh and relaxes them. I wouldn't use it around adults I do not trust , or someone i am trying to impress like a teacher or a future boss.

  9. There are a lot of different slang words. Some words are just shortened and mostly teenagers use them. I think slang is appropriate when you're talking to your friends. It is not appropriate when you are talking to an adult or teacher. I don't use slang my self. I feel like people who use it just try to act cool in front of their friends.

  10. Yeah I do use slang, but not all the time...I don't consider it bad to use slang unless its a serious situation and you need to be mature and not all over the place with your words when doing something serious such as; school, church, etc. I feel like their are different types of slang, the slang that sounds all ghetto and the slang thats just shorter abbreviations for words. Usually a lot of people now a days use slang, there really is no one person that doesn't use slang at least once in their life...but I believe the people that use the most slang are the ghetto type of people or the try hards to being ghetto.Slang is not the most appropriate in general but in this generation its kind of like muscle memory, you just say it now a days without thinking...its just in your brain and its automatic. I understand that in places and times slang should not be used but thats that persons call on whether they would liked to be called ghetto, idiotic, improper in certain situations.

  12. Im a white girl, and therefore use slang frequently, but much like Elijah said, I only use slang by word of mouth, never written or typed. I do not believe there are different kinds of slang, no, and it appropriateness is situational. In an informal setting (School) slang is usually appropriate, however in a formal setting, such as a funeral, or event of some kind no, Slang is not appropriate.

  13. Everyone uses slang. You may not realize you are using slang but you are. If you are presenting a speech you won't want to use slang because some people may take it the wrong way and say its rude when using slang when saying a speech about something important. In my opinion when you are talking to friends its not a problem because its just your friends and its not a big deal. some examples of slang in my opinion are "txt", "lol", "ppl", "wut" ,"b4, "bae"

  14. To me slang is just a way of texting and every now and then a way of talking. Usually you will find mostly kids/teenagers using slang over adults, this reason is because usually slang is said as 'improper use of speaking (language)'. When you get older and become more mature and a cult you have to use the correct way of speaking because if you are a grown adult and your using slang people will see you as childish. Lets be honest what company would want to hire someone who constantly uses incorrect ways of speaking. As you get older and more mature you should want to carry yourself higher then kids/teenagers/children carry them selves, adults are suppose to lead by example so if a parent is saying "Wassup, IKR, Yasss, Yo, Bruhhhh, Dawg, " or etcetera there child is going to grow up thinkings its ok to go through life saying that. Well of course my generation uses slang because to be honest were lazy and slang comes natural to us instead of always speaking proper or texting, it is a more relaxed or laid back sort of thing for us.

  15. Yes, I use slang and I don't feel any type of way about people that use it. Everyone has there own slang no matter if you talk english, spanish, german etc etc.. All people talk it, it's just shorter phrases of other words. Slang is appropriate when your talking to your friends and maybe family members but it can also be inappropriate. Like if you're talking to your parents, teacher or an adult you just met.

  17. personally, i only use slang around my friends/family or people i know. its not right to "use" slang to teachers, parents or older people its disrespectful. some of the words i would use would be bro, cuz, yo, etc. mainly people who are hanging with friends or family would use slang. you wouldn't go up to someone you don't know and say wassup broham or hey homie.

To me, slang is equal to speaking Ebonics to others. Slang is used to give things another name like we call marijuana, dope and cocaine as crack (its common to hear these everywhere). I feel like it's okay to hear this around your friends and speak to them that way as they won't care about what you say, as long as they know what you mean they're fine. You should NOT tap this way to an important person like your boss, parents, or coworkers as they will not appreciate that type of talk.

  19. I use slang sometimes but I might always know if I do or not. But in my opinion I think slang is just kind of a quicker way to say things. When I'm texting I think thats where I use the most slang because I always abbreviate everything but it just takes less time. It might be lazy but I don't want to type a two paragraph message to someone. But I also think that people who use slang a lot is kind of funny because every other word is a slang word, And half the time you can't understand what they are trying to say.

    1. I agree with you completely, most slang is just abbreviations. Of course there are some words that are not abbreviations and those I consider those improper slang but it's perfectly okay to use abbreviations to make things quicker.

  20. Lots of people use slang. Its just a way people talk. There is a time and place for everything so its okay to use just make sure its at a appropriate time. Most people just use it because its easier for them so you shouldn't judge but its okay to have your own opinion. If you use slang make sure its at the right time and your not talking to teachers or parents.

  21. Slang is used a lot now a days like in texting there are many abbreviations for words even whole sentences like "lol" which has lost all its meaning and is overused. Slang evolves over time you won't see people saying rad anymore. Some of the newer slang words are even more stupid though like "swag" what even is swag? Nobody knows its just a stupid word used by stupid people. Some slang like twerk and selfie were even put in the dictionary. Any word can become slang I can make up a random word right now say it has some meaning make a celebrity say it on twitter then magic I made a slang word that everyone will say for half a year then it will be "stupid and over used" its the same pattern. Maybe one day slang will evolve so much that we won't even say words as there spelled maybe wen i rite an s a i wil rite it lik dis. Who knows I guess its just goes to show how lazy this generation really is.

  22. To me Slang is the ghetto and improper version of our english language. I feel as if slang is just used for either the people that are to lazy, for the people that think talking in big words are hard, and for the people that thinks it's cool. The people that use slang annoy me because you never understand what they are saying, but it all depends on the kind of slang they use. If the slang is like a shorter way but it is proper and easy to understand then that's acceptable, but if it's a short word that makes up for a phrase or sentence then it is dumb. For example, the term ratchet makes up for someone or something that is/who is ugly and unattractive.

    2. I agree that slang is a ghetto language, but it's also a very easy and fast way of typing and communicating. The way the world is today, no one knows how to talk without using slang.

  23. I use slang sometimes, but most of the time if people use slang they don't notice it. For some people like me we don't even realize that we are using slang, it just comes out. words like "Ya'll" or "Gotta" are more of an abbreviation than improper grammar. If a word isn't an abbreviation and just random words people made up then I consider it improper slang. I feel slang can be used to help someone quickly make their point and that is why I like slang.

  24. I do use slang sometimes , but in a joking matter. I know a lot of people that use slang all the time. I think there is different kinds of slang depending where you are coming from, for example , country people may talk differently and refer to things differently then someone that lives in the city. There isn't a certain type of people that use slang , everyone uses slang at one point and might not even realize it. Slang is not appropriate at all times, if you are going to a job interview you don't use slang your not gonna go to the job interview and be like, aye yo whats up bruh I'm here to get a job . That is not going to work your not going to get the job. I think when you are with your friends is the best time to use slang.

  25. Everyone uses slang now a days, because that's what the world has become. Most people barely even know how to communicate today unless their phone isn't in front of there face. I honestly use slang, but only sometimes. Slang is appropriate when you are texting or on social media and with your friends. You should never use slang while talking and having a conversation cause you just look dumb. Yes, there are certain people that use slang, but i think most of the world uses slang, my mom even uses slang! Slang is never appropriate to use in front of a teacher or an adult, keep it in text and with your friends.
